Surrounding area
The Italian region of Tuscany is split into ten provinces, one of which
is Lucca, with the city of the same name being the capital. The province
of Lucca is among the most beautiful in Tuscany with its coastal region
of Versilia, the Apuan Alps, parks and natural reserves around Garfagnana
all forming a rich and varied landscape. This stunning area lies in the
northern tip of Tuscany and borders Liguria.
Vesilia is one of the most popular holiday regions
in Italy and with its long beaches, coastal dunes, mountains and pretty
towns and villages it is an ideal location for all members of the family.
Versilia stretches between Marina di Massa in the north and Massaciuccoli
Lake in the south and has a very temperate climate with an average of
270 days of sunshine a year.
Some of the most well known towns along the Versilian coast are Marina
di Massa, Forte dei Marmi, Marina di Pietrasanta, Torre del Lago, Lido
di Camaiore and Viareggio.
Forte dei Marmi is a quiet and exclusive resort
which was origanally built around the port from which the boats were loaded
with the marble from the nearby Apuane Mountains. As well as the endless
beach you can also find beautiful gardens of all sizes here.
Viareggio is a lively place where there is always something happening.
It is famous world wide for its carnival which takes place over four weekends
in February and March.
Inland from Versilia and behind the Apuan Alps lays
the breathtaking area known as Garfagnana. Here you will find valleys,
chestnut forests, hillsides full of olive trees, marble mountainsides
and quarries, lakes, mills and ancient villages. As well as being a well
known spa area there is also a sunken village and an ancient cave system
known as the Cave of the Wind (Grotta del Vento). Garfagnana is an ideal
area for hiking, cycling and riding and is a paradise for nature lovers.
Wine is made in the hills around Lucca going towards
a village called Montecarlo and there is a 'wine road' between the two
places called the Strada del Vino Colline Lucchesi e Montecarlo.
This road is located south-east from the Candia wine area and continues
from Santo Stefano towards San Quirico di Moriano until reaching the bridge
at Moriano It then contiues through Colle, Valgiano and Gragnano until
reaching Montecarlo.
The whole area is very well serviced with excellent
bus and train systems, shops and facilities to provide everything you
need and good schools and hospitals.
Taking into account the vast amount of delicious wines produced in this
area and the mouth watering local food it is obvious that this little
corner of Tuscany has everything you could ever need.
